What is a summary?
It is a fairly brief restatement, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, of the contents of a passage.
Strictly speaking, you simply report back what the other writer has said. It is not your job to make value judgments about how right or wrong what (s)he says is. That would be a different kind of paper, a summary-response, a critique, or a position paper.
You are simply concerned about what is in front of you on the page...for the moment, nothing else matters, not even your opinion.
Summaries are written with a specific word limit. You must be careful never exceed the word limit.
There are eight key steps in writing the summary and once you know what they are you are one step closer to masertering the art of summarizing.
